For the Beauty of the Earth

For the Beauty of the Earth

17. For the Beauty of the Earth

In my realistic landscapes and cityscapes I paint scenes that I have come upon that I have found particularly attractive. Sometimes there has been a sudden, surprising fresh seeing of a scene that I then want to try to capture in painting. I've often been struck by the beauty of the tulips that faithfully bloom each spring in my front yard garden. These are the tulips in this painting. I've put them together with a Celtic knot and the blue flowers and some insects. The knot and flowers both speak to the hidden order of rhythm and of pattern, without which, according to John O'Donohue, there could be no beauty. As he wrote in Beauty, The Invisible Embrace: "When we expect and engage the Beautiful, a new fluency is set free within us and between us. The heart becomes rekindled and our lives brighten with unexpected courage."
